Carbon monoxide (CO) is believed to mediate many of the cytoprotective effects attributed to the activation of heme oxygenase (HO-1), the enzyme responsible for CO production. Recently, the study of CO-releasing molecules (CO-RMs) has provided a new approach for the delivery of CO. In the present study, we examined whether the cardioprotective properties of CO-RM2 in isolated rat hearts subjected to an ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) sequence were associated with the presence of CO. Inhibition of Plant Lactate Dehydrogenase Isoenzymes by Benzoic Acid and Cinnamic Acid Derivatives

Summary Several phenolic compounds such as derivatives of benzoic and cinnamic acid were investigated with respect to their inhibitory effect on potato tuber lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes. Ki values were determined and it was found that they were in the range of 10−2 M for several benzoic acid derivatives while they were in the range of 10−5 M for several hydroxylated cinnamic acid derivatives such as 3,4-dihydroxy cinnamic acid, p(m)nitrocinnamic acid, and 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methyl coumarin as well as kynurenic acid. Pregnenolone sulfate, a naturally occurring excitotoxin involved in delayed retinal cell death.

The present study was designed to investigate the neurosteroid pregnenolone sulfate (PS), known for its ability to modulate NMDA receptors and interfere with acute excitotoxicity, in delayed retinal cell death. Abstract The ontogenesis of isozyme patterns of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), glycerol‐3‐phosphate dehydrogenase (α‐GPDH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G‐6‐PD) and glucosephosphate isomer‐ase (GPI) in Dicentrarchus labrax was studied. ADH is active only in the liver of the adult; a‐GPDH is active in only two tissues in the adult: the A2 isozyme in white skeletal muscle and the B2 isozyme in the liver. Differential gene expression was found only for LDH, MDH and GPI, which have polymeric structure. Abstract Objective The bulk of LDL entrapped in the arterial intima is modified by hydrolytic enzymes, leading to extensive cleavage of cholesterylesters and liberation of fatty acids. The latter induce apoptosis in endothelial cells but are far less cytotoxic towards macrophages. We have compared the cytotoxic effects of enzymatically modified LDL (E-LDL) on macrophages and polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMN). Abstract In this study the spontaneous in vitro cytotoxic activity to tumour cell lines, (K562), by unstimulated sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ) leukocytes was examined by trypan blue exclusion test and lactate dehydrogenase release assay. A high anti-tumour cell line activity of resident peritoneal leukocytes was found at an effector to target ratio (E:T) of 25:1 after incubation for 2 h at 18° C. Rabbit and sheep erythrocytes were not lysed. A low activity was displayed by head kidney and spleen cell populations whereas blood leukocytes revealed no significant activity. Pterostilbene-induced tumor cytotoxicity: a lysosomal membrane permeabilization-dependent mechanism.

The phenolic phytoalexin resveratrol is well known for its health-promoting and anticancer properties. Its potential benefits are, however, limited due to its low bioavailability. Pterostilbene, a natural dimethoxylated analog of resveratrol, presents higher anticancer activity than resveratrol. The mechanisms by which this polyphenol acts against cancer cells are, however, unclear. Here, we show that pterostilbene effectively inhibits cancer cell growth and stimulates apoptosis and autophagosome accumulation in cancer cells of various origins. Differences in skeletal muscle characteristics, metabolic profiles and functional performance between males and females were investigated using young (15--24 yrs) male and female twins as subjects. The comparison included such variables as anthropometry, muscle strength, mechanical power, maximum oxygen uptake, electrical activation of muscle, muscle fibre composition (m. vastus lateralis), and activities of several skeletal muscle enzymes.
